Heartworm
Treatment
FOJA is focused on providing the animals housed at the city shelter, or in approved foster homes, with medical care unavailable to them due to government funding shortfalls. Even though heartworm is a preventable disease, over forty percent of the animals taken in at the shelter are positive for heartworms. They currently have no access to treatment for this always fatal disease. FOJA's "Heart Care Program" offers financial assistance to heartworm positive animals adopted from Animal Care & Protective Services.
Medical
Supplies
The shelter veterinarians have provided FOJA with a list of medical supplies and equipment that they believe would vastly improve the level of care they are able to provide to shelter animals. The list ranges from a $2,000 Pulse Oximeter with ECG, to $150 handheld UV lights for ringworm diagnosis, to special drugs and food for ill animals. FOJA is committed to fulfilling this wish list.
Enrich
Shelter Environment
The low level of city funding for the shelter has resulted in a lack of basic items of comfort for the animals. FOJA believes that every animal deserves a bed to save them from having to sleep on the floor. Animals being treated for illness or injury should have beds designed especially for debilitated animals. Interesting indestructible toys would provide hours of fun for animals housed alone with nothing to relieve the boredom. Thus, beds and toys are keys to enriching the shelter environment for homeless animals.
Promote
Adoptions
Promoting adoption is a paramount focus of FOJA and making the city shelter as "customer friendly" as possible increases the animals' chance for adoptions. FOJA is planning to provide the adoption areas with furniture and fixtures that will welcome citizens looking for a pet and showcase the wonderful animals available.
